As the current year ends and a new year rolls around, it’s easy to feel the pressure to set
resolutions. This can bring up feelings of needing to dive in hard and heavy, to be able to
experience massive changes that you may have been intending to make but did not get the
chance. For instance, hitting the gym daily, eating flawlessly, or completely overhauling our
routines. While it’s great to aspire to better ourselves, the reality that is often not considered is
that change takes time, and building new habits requires patience.
Majority of the time, we set resolutions that are so drastic they feel impossible to maintain. Often
Sometimes we forget that resolutions need to be built within what is currently happening in your life. The truth is there’s nothing wrong with starting small when making resolutions. Sure, starting off big can get the momentum and motivation going but then when life gets busy (because life will get busy), these big goals quickly become overwhelming, leaving us feeling like we’ve failed. We need to recognize that making small, manageable changes that fit your current routine, and lifestyle is one of the best ways to create lasting growth. It may look like a more slowed down approach, but it does not mean your goal to better yourself needs to change.
Gentleness and patience with yourself is key. Instead of focusing on what you should be doing,
consider what feels realistic and meaningful for you. For example, if exercising daily feels like it's impossible, aim for a short walk two or three times a week. If mindfulness is your goal, start
with a two to five-minute meditation practice.
By honoring where you are and celebrating small victories, you create a sustainable path toward
self-improvement. Remember, growth is a journey, not a race. Be kind to yourself—you’re doing
